Trophies awarded at the Summer Show:
- Nat Catchpole Trophy: Best flowering plant in a pot (class 32).
- Copper Kettle: Most meritorious exhibit of fruit in the show.
- Macaulay Challenge Cup: Most meritorious exhibit of Sweet Peas (Class 23).
- Jeffery Challenge Cup: Best Rose in show, irrespective of class.
- Committee Challenge Cup: Best patio pot (class 36).
- Reg Strube Cup: Highest number of points* in the Summer Show floral art classes.
- Edie Catchpole Trophy: Highest number of points* in the Summer Show fruit & vegetable classes.
*First prize = 5 points, second prize = 3 points, third prize = 1 point.
Summer Show Categories
- 10 raspberries, with stalks
- 10 gooseberries other than ‘Red Rough’, one variety,
any colour, with stalks - 10 ‘Red Rough’ gooseberries, with stalks
- 5 strawberries, with stalks
- 8 strigs (bunches) of blackcurrants
- 8 strigs (bunches) of red or white currants
- 5 fruit not otherwise shown in schedule, one variety
- 5 pods of broad beans
- 5 pods of French, climbing or dwarf beans
- 5 pods of peas
- 5 pods of mange tout or snap peas
- 2 lettuce, one variety
- Bunch of 5 carrots, with tops
- 3 beetroots, one variety
- 3 whole bulbs of garlic
- Bunch of 5 radishes
- 5 potatoes, white or coloured, one variety
- 3 vegetables not otherwise shown in schedule, one variety
- 3 courgettes (max length 15cm/ 6”)

- A growing culinary herb garden pot (max 30cm/12” diameter)
- 10 stems of sweet peas, any variety
- 6 blooms roses, large flowered types (e.g. hybrid tea)
- 6 stems cluster-flowered roses (e.g. floribunda)
- A scented rose, to be judged for perfume
- A vase of annual flowers grown from seed in the preceding 12 months; 3
types of flower, 9 stems in total. - A vase of mixed herbaceous perennials
- A single peony flower, any variety.
- A potted Pelargonium (Geranium) in a pot, the pot not to exceed
20cm /8” in diameter - A Fuchsia in a pot, the pot not to exceed 20cm /8” in diameter
- A flowering plant in a pot, other than Pelargonium or Fuchsia, the pot
not to exceed 20cm /8” in diameter - A planted up patio pot, not to exceed 30cm /12” in diameter
- A recycled item used as a planter, not to exceed 30cm / 8” in diameter.
Flowers used in these classes may be bought by the exhibitor.
- Create a “Burst” – a vase full of flowers with a big burst of colour (max width 75cm/2½ ft).
- A medium sized arrangement in a picture frame (max width 45cm/1½ ft.)
- An Ikebana arrangement to celebrate Father’s Day (max width 75cm/2½ ft.)
- A petite arrangement in a circle (max H, D and W between 10 cm/4
inches and 23 cm/9 inches.)
- A decorated dome cake
- 3 Danish pastries
- Olive bread
- A bottle of home-made lemonade
- A painting of sweet peas
- A photograph ‘Inside the greenhouse’
- A stitched centre placemat reflecting the Sussex countryside
- Pot pourri made from flowers from your garden
6 years and under at the time of the Spring Show
- A pipe cleaner model of an animal
- A painting of a flower
- A shoe box farm
- A photograph of a bug
To submit an entry into the Show:
Choose the classes you wish to enter from the membership Show Schedule booklet. Entries are open to all DHS members, who can enter any number of classes.
Fee = 20p per entry
- Cut out one of the forms from the last page of your Show Schedule booklet
- Complete it with your name and address and the details of your entries
- Put it in an envelope with your entry fee.
- Hand it in at Ditchling Post Office no later than 5 p.m. on the Wednesday preceding the show. Late entries will not be accepted.
