The Ditchling Horticultural Society is celebrating our Bicentenary. At 200 years it is the oldest village horticultural society in England and this is quite a historical milestone.
What started as a group meeting at The Bull in 1822 to share common issues went on to become a benevolent, caring society and established a culture which still exists in the very fabric of this village today. Something worth celebrating!

Free entry for Ditchling Horticultural Society Members. Entry is 50p for non members.
A year in the planning, this grand event will feature:
- Our autumn flower, vegetable, produce and creative entries.
- Muriel’s raffle with some extra special prizes donated by local businesses.
- Delicious teas and cakes will be served in The Barn.
- Live music and Morris Dancers
- Children’s activities to get involved with
- Artisan Stalls, displays and so much more….
You can only enter a category in the Show if you are a member (benefits and a joining form can be found on the membership page).
So plan your entries and let's make this show something to remember for the next 200 years!
To enter into the Show:
Choose the classes you wish to enter from the membership Show Schedule booklet.
Anyone can enter any number of classes (1 entry per class).
20p per entry. To compete you must be a DHS member.
From your show schedule:
- Cut out one of the forms from the last page or download a copy and print.
- Complete it with your name and address and the details of your entries
- Put it in an envelope with your entry fee (20p per entry).
- Hand it in at Ditchling Post Office no later than 5pm on Wednesday 31st August.
On the morning of the Show:
- Take your entry along to Ditchling Village Green between 8-9.30am.
- Hand over to the stewards to place in the correct category.
Show timings:
The Show opens 1-5pm.
The Raffle will be drawn at 4pm followed by the presentation of the Show Trophies.
Exhibitors can collect their entries from 5pm.

Trophies awarded at the Bicentenary Show:
- George Blackstone Trophy: for the best trug of vegetables (class 30).
- Wheelwright Challenge Cup (Jim Blackman Award): for the best basket of fruit (class29).
- President’s Challenge Cup: for the highest points* in Sections A & B in Autumn Show.
- Ralli Challenge Cup: Highest number of points* in Cookery and Handicrafts sections in all three shows.
- Davy Challenge Cup: Highest number of points* in Floral Art sections, all 3 shows.
- The Children’s Trophy: (6yrs and under.) Highest number of points* in all 3 shows
- Margaret Buckwell Trophy: (7-ll yrs.) Highest number of points* in all 3 shows.
- The Henry Waller Memorial Trophy: Best kept allotment over the past year
- The Buckwell Trophy: Most improved allotment over the past year.
*First prize = 5 points, second prize = 3 points, third prize = 1 point.

Once bought, your programme automatically enters you into the draw for the Grand show prize – see below for details.
