Community Links

On Wednesday 5th October 2022 the Ditchling Horticultural Society co-ordinated a very successful visit to the allotments by the Ditchling Primary School as part of their Community Action Day. The children measured the allotment beds and staked out the plots and had “the best day ever!”.

This year the DHS will again be able to provide up to 180 daffodil bulbs for the school children of St Margarets’ to plant, enjoy and enter into the Spring Show. Many thanks to Peter Eastwood for his kind sponsorship of this initiative. Details of planting instructions and plant care are always included in the school parents’ newsletter.

In addition to being encouraged to grow daffodils from a bulb the village primary school children will be encouraged to grow salad leaves for showing at the Summer Show and herbs for showing at the Autumn Show. Bulbs, salad seeds and herb seeds (Basil, Dill, Fennell and Chives) will be kindly donated by Peter Eastwood. The DHS committee will again provide instruction sheets for the successful growing and will continue to go into the school and talk with the children about this.

Next term, the children will be learning all about plants in science. With this in mind the Ditchling Horticultural Society will visit the school and talk to children about what the horticultural society does and the benefits of growing your own plants. We are keen for the children to see plants as more than a science topic and really understand how they link to their local community.
